The ND Computer Engineering programme trains technicians and technologists who can install, maintain, and support computer hardware, electronics, and embedded systems used in industry and telecommunications.
NBTE programme objectives
- Draw layouts for computer installation and networking
- Set up, install, configure, and operate computer systems and networks
- Use appropriate instruments and software to test computer subsystems and peripherals
- Carry out routine maintenance and repair of computer hardware, software, and peripherals
- Construct and test simple computer circuits and develop basic programming codes
- Write technical reports and manage small-scale computer-related operations
Programme structure (NBTE)
- 4 semesters (approximately 2 years)
- 17 weeks per semester (15 teaching weeks + 2 weeks registration/examinations)
- Minimum 72–80 semester credit units (varies by programme) to graduate
- 3–4 months Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)
- Curriculum components: General Education courses; Foundation courses; Professional courses; SIWES
About the Programme
Students combine electrical engineering science, digital systems, programming, networking, and workshop practice. Training emphasises hands-on work in laboratories and workshops aligned with NBTE standards, preparing graduates for technician-level roles or progression to HND and professional qualifications.
Programme Outcomes
- Apply principles of digital electronics, microprocessors, and computer architecture
- Install, test, and maintain computer hardware, networks, and electronic systems
- Use industry-standard software tools for design, documentation, and troubleshooting
- Work safely in workshops and comply with engineering practice standards
- Communicate technical information and contribute effectively in team projects
Career Opportunities
Graduates typically enter the workforce as engineering technicians and technologists. With experience and further study, many progress to specialist or supervisory roles.
- Computer Engineering Technologist
- Hardware / Network Technician
- Embedded Systems Technician
- IT Support Specialist
- Electronics Maintenance Technician
- Technical Sales & Support Engineer
- Field Service Technician
- Quality Control Technician (Electronics)
Admission Requirements
Admission to the ND Computer Engineering Technology at RECTEM follows the NBTE-approved curriculum entry requirements and the college's published admissions policy.
O-Level entry
Five credit passes in G.C.E. Ordinary Level, SSCE, WASC, NECO, NTC, or Teachers Grade II, obtained at not more than two sittings, including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and one subject from Technical Drawing, Metal Work, Wood Work, Basic Electronics, Basic Electricity, Further Mathematics, Computer Studies, Economics, Commerce, Statistics, Geography, or Agricultural Science/Biology.
Pre-ND entry
Four credit passes in relevant subjects at the final examination of an NBTE-recognised Pre-National Diploma programme at a polytechnic or similar post-secondary technical institution.
JAMB UTME (full-time)
JAMB Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores are used in the selection of full-time candidates, as stated in the current UTME brochure.
Part-time
